A brand does not need to pick one. Many private-label programmes start with a single hero chelant and add a second as the product range grows.

What the manufacturing partner handles

A competent OEM partner takes on more than the reaction vessel. Expect them to manage grade selection, active-content consistency, packaging, and the document set that lets the brand clear customs and its own compliance review. For European-bound goods this means REACH registration or an Only Representative arrangement, a certificate of analysis (CoA) per batch, a safety data sheet (SDS) in the right language, and an ISO 9001 quality system behind the line.

Packaging is part of the brief. Liquid chelants ship in 25 kg and 250 kg drums or 1,000–1,250 kg intermediate bulk containers. Powder grades go in moisture-proof bags. A brand that wants a specific drum colour, label text or pallet pattern should state it during the agreement, not after the first shipment leaves the port.

Documentation a brand should insist on

Before the first full order, ask for four documents and read them. The CoA shows appearance, active content, pH, density and heavy-metal limits for that batch. The technical data sheet (TDS) gives handling and compatibility ranges. The SDS covers transport and storage. The REACH evidence — a registration number verifiable on the ECHA database, or an Only Representative letter — lets your customer and your customs broker confirm the substance independently. Without these, a "green" claim on the pack has no backbone.

Minimum order quantities and lead times

Private-label volumes start lower than many buyers expect. Evaluation batches of a few drums are normal for bench trials. Full production runs typically begin around one to several tonnes, with mixed pallets possible so a brand can trial two grades at once. Lead time depends on grade and pack: standard liquid grades run a few weeks, custom blends or specific powder mesh sizes take longer. Sea and rail freight both reach major European ports; the documentation travels with the goods.

How to start without risk

The safe path is staged. Request samples in the grade closest to your target, run a bench trial against your current chelant at matched active content, then scale to a pilot batch before committing to annual volume. Keep the biodegradability and heavy-metal data on file — retailers and tender processes increasingly ask for it at the first review.

Do I need to disclose the manufacturer?
