Chelating Agent Storage, Shelf Life and Handling for Buyers

A drum of chelant that arrives in specification but degrades in the warehouse costs the same as one that never shipped. Biodegradable chelants are stable materials, yet each grade — liquid GLDA at 40 to 47 per cent active, liquid MGDA, powder or liquid PASP in defined molecular-weight bands, IDS, ASDA, EDDS — has its own storage rules. Liquid and powder follow different rules

Liquid chelants are aqueous solutions; their enemy is microbial growth and, for some, slow hydrolysis at the extremes of pH. Keep them sealed and within the stated pH band, and they hold active content for the full re-test period. Powder grades avoid the microbial risk but pick up moisture from the air, which can cake the material or shift the effective dose. Store powders in a dry, low-humidity area and reseal the inner liner after each draw.

Temperature, light and freeze-thaw

Most liquid chelants tolerate normal ambient storage, but freezing is the real hazard. A frozen-then-thawed drum can separate or form crystals that will not readily redissolve, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles stress the package. In cold climates, keep liquids above the supplier's stated minimum — commonly a few degrees above 0 °C — and protect outdoor storage from hard frost. Direct sunlight and high heat accelerate slow degradation, so a cool, shaded store is the sensible choice. PASP in particular, being a polymer, prefers stable, moderate temperatures.

Containers and contamination control

Use the original sealed drum or intermediate bulk container where possible; if you transfer, use clean, dedicated, non-reactive vessels. Trace metals from a contaminated line can consume chelant activity or discolour the product, and a crossed grade means a mixed batch that fails your certificate of analysis. Keep the lid closed between draws and avoid dipping tools that have touched other actives.

Shelf life and re-test periods

Suppliers state a shelf life — often 12 to 24 months from manufacture under recommended storage. After that point, a re-test of appearance, active content, pH and microbiology confirms continued fitness rather than assuming it. Receiving and sampling checks

On arrival, check the seal, the batch number and the CoA, and confirm the product matches the order. Draw a small sample before use and note appearance, odour and any separation; a quick pH check against the specification catches most issues early. Keep the sample until the batch is consumed so a later query has a reference. Document the receipt date — it anchors the shelf-life clock and supports any future audit.

Transport and paperwork

Biodegradable chelants are generally not classified as dangerous goods for transport, which simplifies road and sea freight. The paperwork that matters is the safety data sheet, the certificate of analysis and, for EU-bound goods, the REACH evidence via the importer or Only Representative. Store these with the batch record so any future audit can trace a drum from port to line.

Frequently asked questions

Can I store different chelants in the same rack? Yes, provided each stays sealed in its original, labelled container and powders are kept dry. Avoid transferring between shared vessels, because cross-contamination changes the active content you think you are dosing.

What if a liquid freezes in transit? Let it thaw slowly at moderate temperature, inspect for separation or crystals, and confirm active content and pH against the CoA before use. If the material does not return to a uniform state, request a replacement rather than run it.

Does powder go off if it cakes? Caking itself is not degradation, but it signals moisture exposure that can shift the effective dose. Re-test or ask the supplier before using a caked lot.

How long can I keep an opened drum? Treat the opened period as shorter than the sealed shelf life. Reseal tightly, label the open date, and use within a few months while tracking appearance and pH.
