GLDA-Na4 in Metal Cleaning: Alkaline Degreasing and CIP

Metal surfaces are unforgiving towards a chelating agent. The liquor is alkaline, often hot, and loaded with dissolved metal washed off the very parts it is meant to clean. A chelant in this duty has to survive high pH and high free-alkali without breaking down, and it has to keep the dissolved metal in solution so it does not redeposit as a stain. GLDA-Na4 fits this duty because its backbone stays intact in alkaline cleaners and because it holds iron, zinc, copper and aluminium ions long enough for the rinse to carry them away.

Why metal surfaces are hard on chelants

An alkaline cleaner carries caustic, silicate and carbonate builders, runs warm, and strips metal from the substrate it touches. That dissolved metal is exactly what a chelant must manage. If the chelant degrades in the alkali, or if it releases the metal under the local pH, the metal comes back as a streaky or powdery deposit that the next process step cannot hide.

The failures are familiar: grey film on stainless, white bloom on aluminium, rust-coloured marking near welds. Most trace back to metal that was lifted but not held, then dropped again before the rinse.

Alkaline degreasing

In soak and spray degreasing, GLDA-Na4 tolerates free caustic better than several aminocarboxylate alternatives. It keeps iron, zinc and copper in solution through the wash, which prevents re-deposition and supports a bright, even finish on steel and copper alloys. On aluminium and galvanised surfaces, control the free-alkali and the contact time, because high caustic can etch zinc and aluminium regardless of which chelant you use.

The practical benefit is consistency. A line that stains only on the third shift, or only in winter, is often fighting dissolved metal that the chelant load was never sized to hold.

Clean-in-place lines in food and beverage

CIP cycles alternate alkaline and acid stages to remove fat, protein and mineral scale. GLDA-Na4 in the alkaline stage binds the calcium, magnesium and iron that form milkstone and beerstone, and helps keep recovered heat-exchange surfaces clean. Where a peracetic acid stage follows, confirm compatibility with the supplier, since oxidisers can affect organic chelants over long contact.

Automotive, aerospace and parts washing

Spray and immersion washers for engine, brake and structural parts use GLDA-Na4 for soil removal and for holding iron in solution so cleaned steel does not flash-rust before coating. It blends with the anionic and non-ionic surfactants common in these lines, and it supports a phosphate-free positioning where that matters to the buyer.

For precision or aerospace work, specify the impurity ceiling, especially iron and copper, because trace metal in the chelant itself works against a line whose whole purpose is to remove metal.

Caustic tolerance and temperature

Alkaline industrial cleaners commonly run above pH 12, and CIP and degreasing loops run warm. GLDA-Na4 holds up across this range, but the exact ceiling depends on your total formula, not on the chelant alone. Confirm the operating window with the supplier against your builder set and your line temperature before scaling the trial.

Temperature stability is good under normal cleaning conditions; what fails first is usually the rest of the formulation, not the chelant. Compatibility with other adjuncts

GLDA-Na4 works with the silicate, carbonate and surfactant systems typical of alkaline cleaners, and with many enzymes used in industrial cleaners. It is a chelant, not a preservative, so do not expect it to carry microbial stability; that remains a separate specification in any aqueous cleaner.

Where the line also needs corrosion protection after rinse, pair the chelant with a recognised inhibitor rather than assuming the chelant covers it. The two solve different problems.

Specification and sampling

For metal cleaning, the grade and the impurity profile matter more than the headline active number. Request a grade suited to alkaline duty, set a low ceiling on iron and copper, and run a bench trial on your actual soil and substrate. Ask the supplier for the method behind each limit on the certificate. A number without a method is a claim; a number with a method is something your own lab can repeat.

Frequently asked questions

Can it replace EDTA in a caustic cleaner? In many alkaline cleaners it can, on the chelation duty. Verify complexation at your operating pH, because EDTA and GLDA-Na4 do not behave identically as the alkali rises, and the dose that worked for one will not transfer without checking.

Will it etch aluminium or zinc? High free caustic etches these substrates regardless of chelant. Manage pH and contact time, and validate the formula on the actual alloy before full production.

Are food-contact grades available? Availability depends on the grade and on local approvals. Confirm the specific grade and the documentation with the supplier rather than assuming one grade covers every line.

Does it affect odour or colour of the cleaner? A low-colour, low-odour grade is normal for this product, but confirm the specification, because colour and trace metal move together through most purification trains.
